SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop with Damian Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Damian Gorman is a poet and playwright from Newcastle\, Co. Down\, who has a long association with Cushendun. His most recent work for the stage – BEYOND BELIEF\, a musical drama about John and Pat Hume – had a sell-out run in Derry’s Guildhall this Spring\, and the final performance was live-streamed across the world. Alongside his own writing\, he has always been an encourager of writing in other people.

SUMMARY:European Heritage Open Day
DESCRIPTION:The Old Church Centre\, formerly a Church of Ireland\, was built in 1840 by Michael Harrison. Because of a dwindling congregation\, it was deconsecrated and in 2006 a group of people concerned about the future of the Old Church formed Cushendun Building Preservation Trust\, which has now leased the building from the Church of Ireland. Cushendun Building Preservation Trust was awarded funding through National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders to restore the building and give it a new lease of life as a heritage\, arts and community space. The Old Church Centre opened in 2019 and runs a busy programme of activities. The building is a charming example of simple\, rural\, ecclesiastical architecture. The weekend of European Heritage Open Days 2023 is part of Cushendun Old Church Centre’s (OCC) annual September Culture Month\, scheduled to begin on the evening of September 8 with the launch of artist Raymie Watson’s evocative ‘Hands of History’ exhibition. This exhibition\, on display throughout the weekend\, showcases a series of bronze sculptures of the hands of the chief negotiators of the historic Good Friday Agreement. Visitors to the Old Church Centre on Saturday morning from 11am – 2pm and on Sunday from 11am-5pm will also have the opportunity to talk to staff and volunteers about the history of the Old Church and how the centre was developed\, and receive details of current events\, exhibitions and future programmes. Visitors will have the use of an interactive iPad which provides information on past and current projects developed by the Old Church Centre and signposts information about links.

SUMMARY:Brìghde Chaimbeul & Aidan O’Rourke
DESCRIPTION:A duo of subtlety\, close listening and deep musicianship bringing together two of Scotland’s most sensitive and exploratory traditional artists. Lau’s award-winning fiddler/composer Aidan O’Rourke teams up with pioneering piper Brìghde Chaimbeul to explore ancient tune repertoire. Their sound is raw\, real and rugged: they ditch excess\, don’t bother with anything gratuitously flash\, and tap into the most stripped-back\, visceral and lyrical voices of their instruments. Drawing on Gaelic heritage and piping traditions across Europe\, their arrangements are hypnotic and richly textured. \nO’Rourke’s fiddle playing is recognised globally for its depth\, tone and innovation; for propulsive rhythmic drive and a rare soulfulness. With a new album out and her star truly in the ascendant\, a past winner of BBC Radio 2’s Horizon Award\, Brìghde Chaimbeul has already carved out a distinct legacy in contemporary folk\, devising a new way of arranging pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the Scottish small pipes and a trance-like intensity in the tunes. Her acclaimed debut album ‘The Reeling’ was produced by O’Rourke and brought the pair together for the first time\, and her new solo album ‘Carry Them With Us’ released April 2023 is fast gathering a slew of superlative reviews. \n“Simultaneously ancient and modern\, profound and direct.” The Guardian \n“Exciting\, unusual and gorgeous.” – Songlines \n“Pure\, vital energy… exceptional playing.” – Folk Radio
