SUMMARY:The Sands Family
DESCRIPTION:Born\, bred and based in County Down\, The Sands Family have been singing and playing music since the late 1960’s. \nWith their tours\, recordings\, radio and television work the band played a significant part in the creation of the phenomenal world-wide interest in Irish folk and traditional music. \nSiblings Tommy\, Ben\, Colum and Anne would be the first to agree that their ability to weave local and often humorous stories into songs that travel the world is greatly inspired by their connection to the people\, the places and the stories from close to home. \nLike most performers\, the band greatly welcomes the return of live music after the long drought of the past few years and they are all looking forward to a first return visit in many years to the Glens of Antrim for the Big Arts Festival.

SUMMARY:Jazz Night - RONNIE GREER – LINLEY HAMILTON TRIO
DESCRIPTION:RONNIE GREER – LINLEY HAMILTON TRIO \n The Ronnie Greer Linley Hamilton Trio is one of the most respected jazz performance groups in the whole of Ireland with the two frontmen having established themselves at the top of the industry here. \nBlues Guitar legend\, Ronnie\, has been at the centre of the Blues music scene in Ireland now for over 40 years\, having shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the genre including Dr John\, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee\, Lowell Fulson and Memphis Slim to name but a few. His distinctive guitar style melding searing Chicago style licks with Bebop jazz inflections\, has been critically acclaimed as world class. \nHe is joined on the day by piano sensation John McCullough\, who is undoubtedly the first call keyboard player in Belfast\, and a member of the Andrew Strong Band\, having also worked with Dana Masters\, Ken Haddock and Gareth Dunlop. \nAlso in front the celebrated Trumpet / Flugel player Linley Hamilton who has worked with Van Morrison\, Paul Brady\, Foy Vance\, Jacqui Dankworth\, Alan Barnes to name a few\, has four albums out in his own name\, his own BBC Jazz Radio Show on Radio Ulster every Friday night achieved a 1st Class Masters in Jazz Performance from DIT in Dublin before embarking on a Jazz PhD at University of Ulster Magee. \nBetween them\, they combine to bring an eclectic mix of styles to a diverse range of repertoire from the standards of the Great American Songbook to the new material by the likes of James Taylor and Carole King\, as well as familiar and authentic blues material given a new treatment by a trio that has performed together regularly over the past three years and created their own style. A major selling point of the group is the personality and patter between Ronnie\, Linley and John\, which is as informed as it is entertaining and so a concert becomes a show that everyone is a part of\, yet corporately they are just as happy to play in the background with or without vocals and with no announcements. They are also very in demand because they successfully operate at low volume if required. \nSongs that may be performed on the night will include classics such as ‘Tenderly’\, ‘Hallelujah I Love Her So’\, ‘Sensitive Kind’\, ‘My Funny Valentine’\, ‘Watermelon Man’\, ‘Sunny’\, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ and many more from a kaleidoscope of genres\, but with a genuine musical approach by musicians who love the music that they play. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bunting Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:  \nLocal facilitator\, Raymond Watson\, has held workshops with both local primary schools\, St. Ciaran’s and Glenann\, where children have designed their very own bunting. This project was inspired by a project called ‘Flags of Hope’ which in 2010 made a Guinness World Record. That project aimed to create 10\,000 individually created art flags. This was achieved and the single line of ‘art flags’ was flown along the Falls and Shankill peace wall\, a significant site of division. While we may not have 10\,000 art flags\, we do have a fabulous display of artwork that captures the thoughts and imaginations of our local children in 2023. \n  \n  \nFREE

SUMMARY:Dancing at Lughnasa
DESCRIPTION:The Reading Circle is delighted to invite you to join them to watch the film adaptation of Dancing at Lughnasa. This is a 1998 Irish-British-American period drama film adapted from the 1990 Brian Friel play Dancing at Lughnasa\, directed by Pat O’Connor. The film competed in the Venice Film Festival of 1998. It won an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Female Role by Brid Brennan. Brian Friel’s play is an astonishing evocation of a family’s world on the brink of change\, in County Donegal\, 1936. Five sisters bring up the fatherless son of one of them. They are later joined by their brother and the boy’s father. Then something happens that threatens to disrupt this system beyond repair. \nThis event is free for all to attend. \n  \n
