SUMMARY:Sounds of the Blue Book
DESCRIPTION:In 1910\, Irish humanitarian Roger Casement journeyed to the Amazon rainforest of Peru to investigate horrific atrocities committed against Indigenous communities by the rubber industry. His report – now known as The Blue Book – became a pivotal document in the history of human rights. Over a century later\, Peruvian-Irish composer and guitarist Rodrigo Almonte brings Casement’s powerful testimony to life in Sounds of the Blue Book – a striking new suite of music that blends jazz\, improvisation\, and traditional Irish and Peruvian sounds into a moving and richly textured performance.  \nJoined by acclaimed pianist Lorenzo Vitolo and drummer Matthew Jacobson\, Almonte’s trio weaves historical narrative with emotive soundscapes that transport audiences through the Amazonian jungle\, Indigenous rhythms\, and echoes of a forgotten past.   \nDeveloped with the support of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Arts Office and Music Network\, Sounds of the Blue Book is a bold and imaginative musical work. Blending historical depth with contemporary artistry\, the trio crafts a performance that resonates both emotionally and intellectually\, bridging cultures\, timelines\, and traditions through music.  \nTickets £15

SUMMARY:Thin Place; exhibition with Bob Speers
DESCRIPTION:The term “thin place” refers to a location where the veil between the physical and the transcendental appears permeable or “thin”\, a mystical space where the boundary between our tangible world and the unseen world seem to touch.  Peatlands (bogs) are considered to have this special characteristic where there is a connection between the material and the numinous.  \nIn the artist’s own words “My art is currently informed by habitual wanderings through different levels of moor and bog”.  He uses a sample from each bog so that\, in essence the bog named is to be found in the painting.  Bob’s unique work not only includes material taken from bogs all across Ireland but he also incorporates commercial paints and discarded household fabrics.    \nAs someone commented at a former exhibition “Bob Speers has a perspective on the land which is often overlooked”.   \nExhibition Launch 8pm Saturday 27 September: artist interview\, followed by live music. \nFree admission \nExhibition continues until 12 October\, free admission. \n \n

SUMMARY:A Wiser Creature: Roberta Hewitt and the Glens with Anne-Marie Fyfe and Cahal Dallat
DESCRIPTION:“Behind every great man…” they say\, implying the supportive spouse who leaves the high-minded male poet to his creativity!  \nBut as with Dorothy Wordsworth\, Georgie Yeats\, Una Jeffers and more\, Roberta Hewitt (who’d lived in Canada before she met John and had her own independent role in education) not only supported her husband John’s career as a writer but was the very reason for their making the Glens their “chosen place” (as Una Jeffers had brought her Californian poet-husband here).  \nAnd while John Hewitt knew local people regarded him as “some strange bird”\, it was both Roberta’s creation of a weekend escape here at the Glenville gate-lodge (which became as much a hub\, in the Glens\, for the North’s artists and writers as the couple’s Botanic Avenue home was in Belfast) and her day-to-day relationships with Cushendall neighbours and friends\, that produced a radical sea-change in their evolving attitudes to their fellow countrymen\, and inspired John’s political ideas and his most significant poetry.  \nCahal Dallat\, who has spent many years researching the lives of the Hewitts both here and in Coventry\, explores Roberta’s role in the evolution of their thought\, and Anne-Marie Fyfe reads extracts from Roberta’s letters and personal diaries. \n_____  \nAnne-Marie Fyfe  has published five collections & a literary/travel/personal memoir\, No Far Shore\, Charting Unknown Waters (Seren\, 2019). Born in Cushendall\, County Antrim\, she lives in London where she has run Coffee-House Poetry since 1997. www.coffeehousepoetry.org www.annemariefyfe.com  \nBorn in Ballycastle\, County Antrim\, poet\, musician and critic\, Cahal Dallat\, lives in London where he is founder/organiser of the WB Yeats Bedford Park Artwork Project. His latest poetry collection is Beautiful Lofty Things (Salmon Poetry\, Ennistymon\, 2022). www.cahaldallat.com  \n_____  \n£5 Under 18s\n£8  Earlybird (until 31 August)\n£10 Full Price
