SUMMARY:Planting in Unusual Containers
DESCRIPTION:Explore unusual garden planters from mugs to buckets to boxes under the expert guidance of Don Kerr. \nFeel free to bring along some containers if you like (nothing too big) so we can explore ideas of what to plant in them.  \nOriginally from the Coleraine area\, Don Kerr was inspired by a Great Aunt who loved her garden. A career in Horticulture followed after college in Scotland landed him his first job as Head Gardener at a rather grand castle in Aberdeen. There were a number of jobs and locations before NI called him back 11 years ago to become Head Gardener at the Downhill Estate. \nNow retired\, Don is working on his own garden. He is Chairperson of the Roe Valley Gardening Society and a committee member of the Alpine Society. \nHe may also have some plants for sale on the day!

SUMMARY:Phil Scraton: in conversation with Bernadette McAliskey
DESCRIPTION:Bernadette McAliskey is a life-long campaigner for social justice and human rights. She continues to work internationally as a socialist republican and feminist. \nThis conversation with Professor Phil Scraton will focus on Bernadette’s lifelong commitment to socialist-feminism within a society divided by sectarian conflict and economic marginalisation. \nFrom Cookstown\, one of six children\, Bernadette Devlin’s father died when she was nine. Poverty and sectarianism inspired her socialism and republicanism\, she became politically active in the student movement. In 1969 she had a significant role in the Belfast to Derry Civil Rights march attacked by Loyalists. In Derry\, 14 innocent people were shot dead by soldiers of the Parachute Regiment. She was elected MP for Mid-Ulster aged 22. In her writing\, broadcasting and talks her political activism has remained unwavering. \nSince 1997 Bernadette has worked for\, and is now Director of\, the rights-based South Tyrone Community Empowerment Programme\, committed to protecting the rights of families recruited from Europe to work in agriculture and factories. Aiming to eradicate racism and social inequality\, STEP challenges economic marginalisation and social exclusion though personal support and community development. \nPhil is a supporter of the Arts Centre and is Emeritus Professor in the School of Law at Queen’s University\, Belfast. \n \n  \nInternational Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social\, economic\, cultural\, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. \nIWD has occurred for well over a century\, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today\, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country\, group or organization specific. \n#IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

SUMMARY:Finding the Rebel Women of County Antrim
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Ward\, renowned feminist historian and author of Unmanageable Revolutionaries\, brings us this never before told story of Cumann na mBan members from Belfast and the Antrim Glens in the period 1914 to 1924. \nREBEL WOMEN:\nCumann na mBan in Belfast and the\nGlens of Antrim 1914-1924 \nThe early years of the twentieth century saw nationalists in the north of Ireland fighting for their survival\, horrified at the prospect of the partition of six counties during a war of independence intended to achieve the complete independence of Ireland from Britain. \nIn Belfast and in the isolated communities of the Glens of Antrim the republican women of Cumann na mBan played an essential role. \nNot only did they organise arms dumps\, shelter men on the run\, hide money and documents\, provide weaponry for operations\, care for the wounded and organise effective communication systems\, they also paid the price in terms of raids and imprisonment. Their story has never before been told. \nIn this talk feminist historian Dr Margaret Ward will discuss the new archival sources and the information from some of the relatives of these forgotten activists that has enabled her to construct compelling accounts of the courageous contributions of over fifty women. \nThis event is FREE to attend\, but booking a ticket helps us plan.

SUMMARY:John Spillane
DESCRIPTION:John Spillane is a musician\, songwriter\, performer\, recording artist\, storyteller\, poet and dreamer. \nRooted in people\, place and story\, his music transports the listener and his live performances captivate audiences around the world. \nJohn Spillane presented his most artistically ambitious work to date: Fíoruisce – The Legend of the Lough\, in September 2024. The concept album\, to be released on double CD and digital\, features John alongside a stellar cast of collaborators: Ríoghnach Connolly\, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin\, Niamh Farrell\, Nell Ní Chróinín\, and more. \nOn this December evening John will share this work live in the atmospheric surroundings of the Old Church Centre. \nAs an artist John’s music appeals to listeners across many genres and generations. His vocal style has a unique almost sean-nós like quality and his performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish\, irreverent humour. John has the ability to charm\, mesmerise and entertain in equal measure. \nA native of Cork\, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe” and a source of huge creative influence throughout his career. John’s music is inspired by and encapsulates Irish traditional\nmusic in its contemporary form – a reflection of Ireland today. \n“… glorious technicolour hues that transcend linguistic boundaries; world music for a new world.”\n– Irish Times
