SUMMARY:John Spillane
DESCRIPTION:John Spillane is a musician\, songwriter\, performer\, recording artist\, storyteller\, poet and dreamer. \nRooted in people\, place and story\, his music transports the listener and his live performances captivate audiences around the world. \nJohn Spillane presented his most artistically ambitious work to date: Fíoruisce – The Legend of the Lough\, in September 2024. The concept album\, to be released on double CD and digital\, features John alongside a stellar cast of collaborators: Ríoghnach Connolly\, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin\, Niamh Farrell\, Nell Ní Chróinín\, and more. \nOn this December evening John will share this work live in the atmospheric surroundings of the Old Church Centre. \nAs an artist John’s music appeals to listeners across many genres and generations. His vocal style has a unique almost sean-nós like quality and his performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish\, irreverent humour. John has the ability to charm\, mesmerise and entertain in equal measure. \nA native of Cork\, the County he lovingly describes as “the centre of the universe” and a source of huge creative influence throughout his career. John’s music is inspired by and encapsulates Irish traditional\nmusic in its contemporary form – a reflection of Ireland today. \n“… glorious technicolour hues that transcend linguistic boundaries; world music for a new world.”\n– Irish Times

SUMMARY:Aisling Agnew and Richard Allen
DESCRIPTION:Moving On Music is delighted to present two of Northern Ireland’s finest classical musicians for a rare duo outing\, flautist Aisling Agnew and harpist Richard Allen. \nAisling and Richard will present a beautiful programme of music from the vast flute and harp repertoire including music by well-known composers such as Hamilton Harty and Rossini\, alongside a new arrangement of a piece by local composer Greg Caffrey. \nAisling and Richard are in great demand as soloists\, chamber musicians and are regularly seen playing with the Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble\, Opera North\, RTE Concert Orchestra\, Ulster Orchestra\, BBC Philharmonic to name a few. \nAisling has performed across many continents\, from the National Flute Convention in Las Vegas to the Jeonju International Festival in Korea. She is an in-demand educator working regularly with students from Queens university\, the Ulster Youth Orchestra and the University of St Andrews. A BBC & ACNI young musician platform awardee\, Richard has also won 2nd prize at the prestigious Félix Godefroid International Harp Competition in Belgium\, following a 1st prize at the North London Camac Competition. In 2023 he was appointed harp tutor at the Institute of Fine Arts at Leuphana Universität in Germany and gives courses and masterclasses across Europe. \nDon’t miss this evening of exquisite and rarely heard music by two virtuoso musicians\, as they bring you on a journey of music from the 18th century to present day\, from France\, Italy\, Ireland\, Scotland and Wales. \n“The purity and perfect intonation of O’Rourke’s voice and Allen’s sensitive harp playing resulted in excellent performances of these very contrasting settings.”  \nJournal of Music \n“a perfect display of phrasing\, tone and control… it was Aisling’s spectacular performance that stood out in spectacular style. I had heard this many times played by solo violin\, but it is just as impressive for flute\, especially with a flautist of this standard.” \nThe Courier \n“Talented young concert harpist Richard Allen was the star of the show demonstrating the wide range of musical effects and emotions achievable by his instrument from dark and dramatic\, through boisterous and humorous\, to nebulous and otherworldly…virtuoso performance” \nNorthumberland Gazette \n“Agnew’s playing throughout was beautiful with extended techniques on her instrument” \n Belfast Telegraph \nProgramme:   \nChevalier de Saint-George: Sonata for harp & flute obbligato \nLili Boulanger: Nocturne \nGioachino Rossini: Andante con Varionizi \nNino Rota: Sonata for Flute and Harp \nFrancois Borne / Georges Bizet: Carmen Fantasie \nJohn Thomas: Watching the Wheat \nEddie McGuire: Three Chinese Dances \nGreg Caffrey: The Uses of Not* (World premiere of Flute & Harp version) \nHamilton Harty: In Ireland

SUMMARY:Shakespeare’s Women
DESCRIPTION:What if Ophelia met Juliet? Would she give her some relationship advice? What if Portia told Cleopatra to wise up? Headstrong\, feisty and in the thralls of love\, but what can they learn from each other? Would they be happier (and less dead) if they just dumped their men? \nStuck in purgatory. Watch as Jules and Fee jump in and out of heroes\, villains\, lovers and tyrants probing Shakespeare’s best-known characters to learn a little more about themselves. Can Goneril give them strength? Cleopatra power or Portia guile? Could Hamlet be the key to unlocking who they are\, what went wrong and why they’re still stuck playing their parts over and over forever more? \nCommedia of Errors are delighted to present this new production of their smash hit Shakespeare’s Women. Described as ‘Polished\, thoughtful and good fun’ by Alan in Belfast the debut play by Clare McMahon returns. Following on from The Gap Year (Lyric Belfast)\, I Am Maura (Belfast Children’s Festival) and most recently Mary Ann\, The Forgotten Sister (Kabosh) and integrating director Benjamin Gould’s signature bold characterisation\, snappy pacing and high energy\, we are excited to open this new revised play in Belfast’s Grand Opera House with an all-Ireland tour to follow. \nSeamlessly fusing modern comedy and drama with classical verse\, audiences will see Shakespeare and his favourite women in a brand-new light. A modern examination of the relationships between men and women\, this production has a direct appeal to younger audiences\, female adults and anyone else who wants to see Shakespeare dissected by two dead young women determined to be penned anew. \nShakespeare’s Women deals with themes of: relationships\, female-empowerment\, toxic masculinity\, and suicide. \nSuitable for 12+

SUMMARY:Revue
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! \nSinger Emma Loudon\, multi-instrumentalist/producer Marty Price\, Sean McCann (bass)\, Ioannis Tsouliakis (keys) and Josh McCullough (drums)  – all share a love for classic song writing and folk music in its broadest sense; Irish & British traditional songs and the Americana of roots\, jazz and blues. They filter this mix through a modern indie folk lens\, fans of theirs often also like Emma Langford\, Glen Hansard and they count among their influences\, Paul Simon\, The Band\, and The Beatles. \n\n\n\nWhy Can’t You Stay\, released in Spring 2023\, was as inspired by the natural world as it was by themes of loss\, specifically the recent loss of Emma’s father (a lifelong singer/bassist) and her brother\, although losses of relationships\, friendships and environments have also mixed and joined with the psychological meditations and simmering feminist heat that has always existed in their songs. \n\n\n\n‘Evocative instrumentals and passionate vocals intertwine with the group’s intricate storytelling\, creating a sound that is as haunting as it is captivating.’\n– Hot Press \nRemember that we are a BYOB venue.
