SUMMARY:The Painters Of Cushendun Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of rarely-seen paintings will take place on the weekends of the 8th and 15th of June 2024\, from 11am to 5pm\, in the Old Church Centre in the village of Cushendun. This picturesque Glens of Antrim village\, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty\, was the location for many paintings by acclaimed 20th Century artists such as James Humbert Craig\, Maurice Wilks\, Charlie McAuley\, Theo Gracey\, Rowland Hill and Kenneth Webb. \nTwo of these artists\, James Humbert Craig\, the 80th anniversary of whose death is on the 12th of June\, and Maurice Wilks\, made their homes in the area\, which offered huge scope for the creation of seascapes and landscapes of every kind\, from high bog-land and wooded hills\, to hay meadows and grazing livestock on the riverbanks of the green glens. \nThese painters\, and others\, were variously associated with Cushendun and with the Glens of Antrim School of Art from the 1910s to the 1960s\, producing oil and watercolour paintings of outstanding quality\, thereby not only creating a demand for their art but also setting an artistic standard which still influences local and visiting artists of today. \nThe exhibition is funded by the Esmé Mitchell Trust. \n

SUMMARY:Brothersbroke
DESCRIPTION:Following their sell out success at Edinburgh Fringe 2023\, Irish duo Brothers Broke are bringing their critically acclaimed show “When Judas Met John: Songs of Dylan and Lennon” to The Old Church Centre in Cushendun. \nThe show – which received 5-star reviews at EdFringe ’23 and has just received ‘Sellout Show’ status from EdFringe’24  – is influenced by the meeting of Bob Dylan and The Beatles\, where the twin brothers compare\, adapt and perform a unique interpretation of songs by both artists. \nThe 90-minute show is casual\, intriguing and engaging\, comparing the like-minded and socially conscious lyrics of Dylan and Lennon. The duo modify\, interweave and present the songs in a unique folk style with tight sibling harmonies\, around a story of the influence\, jealousy\, parody and respect that each artist had for the other. \n“The interweaving of songs from both Dylan and Lennon was a stroke of genius.” – Counter Culture \n“Far more in-depth than a simple tribute concert. The music is exquisite” – The Wee Review \n“Absolutely Fantastic! A unique and thought-provoking concept” – Sinners Music \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEpU-raSGck \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ursula Burns - The Dangerous Harpist
DESCRIPTION:How many Bardic Harpers does it take to change a Lightbulb?\nThe bardic harpers were Male. Rumours have it they were mostly blind and they did not have a light switch between them. They did however have ideas\, the inner vision of wisdom\, social commentary\, poetry\, beauty\, humour and song to communicate. Through their work they  documented history and broadcast concepts and ideas. They were the media of their time.  Where ever they sat was considered the top table. Only the bards could challenge and make fun of the King/ Chieftan. Maybe that is why they were ‘Dangerous’. The original comics with a spiritual twist.\nThis new show is not a history lesson but an exploration of what got lost in harping history. Ursula is proposing the idea that what we face as a society with cancel culture and what she faces as a Dangerous harpist/artist/comic/ songwriter navigating cancel culture\, has resonances with the cultural shifts that took place in the 1600s in Ireland. Then\, they were loosing their language\, culture\, sovereignty and bardic traditions. Now we are on the cusp of Transhumanism and the stakes are just as high.\nUrsula will tell this story by walking through aspects of her 30 years song writing\, some fun songs\, some serious with a performance that breaks all rules and a truly unique harp experience.\n“Ursula Burns has invented her own wild style of harp playing and Spell is a mini masterpiece\, pitch perfect\, it deserves our fullest attention” – The Irish Times \n“Burns is a perceptive writer with the ability to capture the profound and the profane with equal clarity” – Hot Press
