Distinguished scholar Phil Scraton is Professor Emeritus of the School of Law, Queen’s University, and has held visiting professorships in Australia, New Zealand and the U.S.A. His research includes deaths in custody; the rights of the bereaved following disasters; prisons; and children’s rights. He is the author of seventeen books, and the primary author of Hillsborough Independent Panel’s ground-breaking report, Hillsborough (2012). He is most recently co-author of research into Mother and Baby Homes / Magdalen Laundries (2021) and police brutality at the 2022 Paris European Champions’ League final. Awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, he refused an OBE – and was castaway on BBC’s Desert Island Discs. In this event, and in conversation with Claire McKeegan, he discusses some of his experiences.
