Jazz Night – RONNIE GREER – LINLEY HAMILTON TRIO

28 April 2023 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

£10

RONNIE GREER – LINLEY HAMILTON TRIO

The Ronnie Greer Linley Hamilton Trio is one of the most respected jazz performance groups in the whole of Ireland with the two frontmen having established themselves at the top of the industry here.

Blues Guitar legend, Ronnie, has been at the centre of the Blues music scene in Ireland now for over 40 years, having shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the genre including Dr John, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Memphis Slim to name but a few. His distinctive guitar style melding searing Chicago style licks with Bebop jazz inflections, has been critically acclaimed as world class.

He is joined on the day by piano sensation John McCullough, who is undoubtedly the first call keyboard player in Belfast, and a member of the Andrew Strong Band, having also worked with Dana Masters, Ken Haddock and Gareth Dunlop.

Also in front the celebrated Trumpet / Flugel player Linley Hamilton who has worked with Van Morrison, Paul Brady, Foy Vance, Jacqui Dankworth, Alan Barnes to name a few, has four albums out in his own name, his own BBC Jazz Radio Show on Radio Ulster every Friday night achieved a 1st Class Masters in Jazz Performance from DIT in Dublin before embarking on a Jazz PhD at University of Ulster Magee.

Between them, they combine to bring an eclectic mix of styles to a diverse range of repertoire from the standards of the Great American Songbook to the new material by the likes of James Taylor and Carole King, as well as familiar and authentic blues material given a new treatment by a trio that has performed together regularly over the past three years and created their own style. A major selling point of the group is the personality and patter between Ronnie, Linley and John, which is as informed as it is entertaining and so a concert becomes a show that everyone is a part of, yet corporately they are just as happy to play in the background with or without vocals and with no announcements. They are also very in demand because they successfully operate at low volume if required.

Songs that may be performed on the night will include classics such as ‘Tenderly’, ‘Hallelujah I Love Her So’, ‘Sensitive Kind’, ‘My Funny Valentine’, ‘Watermelon Man’, ‘Sunny’, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ and many more from a kaleidoscope of genres, but with a genuine musical approach by musicians who love the music that they play.
